LOW LIBIDO

Primary hormones that affect women’s libido after menopause:

Women experience sexual transition throughout their lifetime. They start having their sexual sensations from the time when they reach the adolescence period and start menstruating. The phase continues steadily until they conceive and give birth to baby. Motherhood alters the hormonal balance in their body and they have low libido for a temporary phase. Situations get back to normal again after a certain period and continue as usual until women enter the menopausal stage. This phase in a woman’s life is marked by excessively low sexual drive as well as complete loss of sexual interest.

The stages of sexual interest in a woman’s life are directly connected with hormones. Thus, let us have a look at the hormones which determine the sex life of women.

Estrogen

This is the chief hormone that plays a key role in determining sexual desires in women who have attained their menopausal age. It needs attention here that the main function of estrogen is to create sexual sensation in women during conjugal activities. This hormone also increases the lubrication of vagina so that penetration becomes convenient during sexual intercourse. In addition to this, estrogen maintains the elasticity and firmness of the vaginal tissues. When women approach their menopausal stage, the body starts producing less estrogen. This alters sexual desires in women and they experience low libido. Lack of lubrication in the vagina causes symptoms like vaginal dryness which make intercourse painful. Likewise, lack of vaginal sensation make women disinterested in sex.

Progesterone

Progesterone is necessary to retain sexual desires. This hormone restores libido and maintains sexual sensation in women. Menopausal phase vehemently decreases the production of progesterone. This leads to situations when women experience night sweats, hot flashes, and vaginal dryness. Actually, the side effects of reduced production of estrogen become visible when progesterone production drops to zero during menopause. Thus, low libido becomes evident in women during this phase.

Androgens

Experiencing low libido during menopausal phase is also caused due to decrease in the production of the androgens. Testosterone is one of the vital forms of androgen which determine sex life in women. There is a noticeable drop in the production of testosterone by the time women reach their menopausal age. Eventually, their interest towards sexual activities starts reducing simultaneously due to inadequacy of testosterone and other androgen in their blood.
