ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION / ERECTION ISSUES

About Erection Problems & Free On-line Questionnaire

Erectile dysfunction is also known as impotence and is the most common sexual disorder in men. Erectile dysfunction is clinically defined as: persistent or recurrent inability to attain, or to maintain until completion of the sexual activity, an adequate erection, which causes marked distress (DSM-5: diagnostic manual).

Accurate statistics for a variety of reasons are difficult to attain. For example younger men may not report the dysfunction due to a lack of knowledge and expectations, and factors need to be considered such as illness or injury. We can however assume that it is common within the community. Current recorded statistics, figures by age:

    • 6.5% 20 – 29
    • 3.8% 30 – 39
    • 13.1% 40 – 49
    • 33.5% 50 – 59
    • 51.5% 60 – 69
    • 69% 70 + and increases with age

Erectile dysfunction can also be categorized as either:

    • Mild: successful erection 7-8 out of 10 attempts
    • Moderate: successful erection 4-6 out of 10 attempts
    • Severe: successful erection 0-3 out of 10 attempts
    • Non-acquired meaning the issue has always existed
    • Acquired meaning in the past getting or maintaining an erection was not a problem but now it is
    • Situational: it only happens in certain circumstances / environments
    • Generalised: it occurs all the time / in all situations
    • Occurs only during masturbation (self-pleasuring)
    • Occurs only with another person or
    • Occurs during both self-pleasure and with another person

There are many known contributing factors that either cause or maintain the dysfunction. Some of which include:

    • Health issues, disease and illnesses
    • Injuries and congenital defects
    • Environmental factors such as substance use or abuse
    • Certain medications
    • Aging
    • Psychological issues such as: personal and cultural attitudes towards sexuality, up-bringing, previous trauma, performance anxiety, current relationship satisfaction, general life stress / anxiety, general life satisfaction and previous experiences of sexual encounters.

Like all sexual issues for both men and women, the issue can be complex and may stem from either one cause or a variety of factors. However don’t loose heart just yet. Research indicates that with thorough assessment and correct and committed intervention, for many individuals the problem may be overcome.
